Pi

Pi is a reaction against feature creep. Mario Zechner — the libgdx creator — built it after Claude Code grew unpredictable, betting that an agent with just four tools and a one-page prompt would stay stable and do exactly what you tell it. That minimalism is the whole point: there's no plan mode, no subagents, and no permissions system, so out of the box you're "living dangerously" with an agent that will happily run any command. What you get in return is control. Pi is genuinely model-agnostic, so it reuses the Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot subscription you already pay for with no markup, and its tiny prompt makes it a favorite for local models. The real magic is the TypeScript extension system: developers describe building their own task trackers, ops dashboards and subagent "fleets" in an afternoon, and hot-reload them live. That it's free, open source, sitting above 46,000 GitHub stars, and now underpins Peter Steinberger's OpenClaw tells you the engineering crowd takes it seriously. The catch is equally clear — this is a tool that rewards tinkering, not a turnkey IDE. If you want safety rails, a GUI and a polished docs site, look elsewhere. If you want to shape your own one-person code factory and actually understand it, Pi is close to unbeatable.
