Our Verdict

Highly Recommended

The editor built around AI from day one — if you want AI to be a first-class citizen in your coding workflow, this is it.

Cursor took VS Code's familiar interface and rebuilt the AI interaction layer from scratch. The result is an editor where AI isn't bolted on—it's woven into every action. Tab completion predicts multi-line changes based on your intent, Cmd+K rewrites selected code in place, and the composer mode orchestrates changes across multiple files simultaneously. These aren't gimmicks; they meaningfully reduce the friction between thinking and implementation.

The model flexibility is a practical advantage: you can use Claude, GPT-4, or other models depending on the task, switching between them mid-conversation. The codebase indexing means the AI understands your project structure, not just the current file. For solo developers and small teams doing rapid prototyping or complex refactoring, Cursor currently offers the tightest human-AI collaboration loop.

The trade-offs: it's subscription-based with usage limits on premium models, the enterprise compliance story is less mature than GitHub Copilot, and it's macOS/Windows/Linux only (no web IDE). If your team is heavily invested in JetBrains IDEs, switching to Cursor means leaving that ecosystem entirely.

Best for

  • Solo developers and small teams doing rapid prototyping
  • Complex multi-file refactoring with AI guidance
  • Developers who want to use multiple AI models flexibly
  • Anyone whose workflow is already VS Code-based

Consider alternatives if

  • Your team requires enterprise compliance, IP indemnification, and audit logs (→ GitHub Copilot)
  • You work primarily in JetBrains IDEs and don't want to switch (→ GitHub Copilot, JetBrains AI)
  • You prefer terminal-based agentic workflows over editor-based ones (→ Claude Code)
